Top Tips for a Pre-Christmas Clear Out
Christmas is just around the corner (29 days to be exact). Perhaps you have your relatives coming to stay and you need to clear out your spare bedroom. Maybe your kitchen needs a good sort out before the big Christmas cook up. No matter what reason you have for your clear out, it’s a great time to create your to-do-list and get started on your huge Christmas clear out. Here are some tips to help you get on top of your pre-Christmas clear out.
Make a plan & stick to it
It’s important to put a plan in place before tackling your pre-Christmas clear out. What is it you want to achieve? Which rooms need to most attention? Does your spare room need clearing out because you have relatives coming to stay? Then make this your priority. If, however you need to make space in your garage for your kids new bikes, then prioritise getting rid of the junk in there. What can stay and what needs to go? Think about potential problems before they happen! If planning a big home clear out, consider arranging a waste collection, this will save you a lot of time and hassle.
Think Green
While clearing out your home, consider the environmental impact. Be careful when choosing skip hire and waste collection companies that they are licensed and they recycle as much of the waste as possible.
There are great online resources to make your cleaning routine eco-friendly. Discover some more uses for everyday household items such as vinegar and baking soda rather than using expensive and toxic chemicals. Steam cleaners are also a great way to clean your home without the use of chemicals. Consider ways you can reuse and up-cycle your old belongings. Think whether you know anyone who would benefit from your old items.
Donate to charity
While you’re clearing out your home, think about how your old possessions could make a difference to someone else’s life this Christmas. Charities are always on the look out for great gifts for people who are less fortunate. If you have toys, furniture, books, kitchenware or clothes in good condition that you no longer use, consider donating them to a local charity shop.
Call in back up
There is a lot of work involved in a house clear out, which is not fun to do alone. Asking family and friends to help will save breaking your back and get the job done a lot quicker! Make sure you get all of the family involved, especially the kids with a reward of pocket-money, a BBQ or pizza night. Have some fun decluttering while teaching the kiddies teamwork, cleaning skills and how to keep an organised household.
If you prefer to keep your hands clean and your back intact, it might even be worth paying the experts to the do the heavy work for you and investing in our waste collection service. The added bonus of this service is that you don’t need no horrible skips on your driveway for days on end, keeping your curb appeal intact for those all-important Christmas visitors.
Declutter & organise
Before cleaning your house, it’s important to remove all old belongings that you no longer use that are taking up space. Have a look online for some handy ways you can declutter your home. Clear out overflowing dressers, the kitchen pantry, bulging closets, bathroom cabinets, bookshelves, linen cupboards, the garage and junk rooms.
Make room for new belongings
Christmas is a great time to have a good old clear out ready for the influx of new gifts you will receive.
Don’t forget the outside of your home
Once you have cleared out the inside of your home, don’t forget ways you can clean up the outdoor areas. Dead plants and flowers should be removed, the lawn should be tended to and new seeds planted ready for the warmer months. Also check your outdoor furniture. Rotten old planters, broken fence posts, or garden toys and play equipment can go too!
Make changes you can live with
Once all the hard work is done, consider making changes that you will maintain! Invest in some better storage solutions that will allow you to organise your belongings more effectively or introduce a new rule that you will sort through your household waste regularly, recycling as much as you can. Going forwards, go by the rule that if you haven’t used it or worn it for a whole year then throw it because you don’t need it!
