The Ultimate Day-After-Christmas Cleanup Guide

Cleaning up after Christmas is a little bittersweet. On one hand it’s sad to say goodbye to Christmas magic and on the other hand it feels good to reclaim the space that Christmas takes up. Whatever your feelings are on the matter, it’s a task that inevitably needs to be done. There are several things that you can do to make your clean up more enjoyable and set you up for success next year. 

Make it fun

Dreading the cleanup will only make it worse. So put some music on, get the family involved and knock out the cleaning with a smile!

Take pictures

Before you start your clean up, take pictures of all your decorations. If you liked how you did it this year, having a photo to reference will help you recreate it next year.

Decide where you need help

Make a list of tasks to be done and decide which ones you’ll need help with. 

Make an ornament storage 

Ornament storage boxes are great for keeping your ornaments safe during this year. 

Wrap your lights

Wrap your lights around a piece of cardboard to make them easy to identify and unwrap next year. 

Store wrapping paper

A long shallow storage bin makes for great storage solution for your holiday themed gift wrap.

Keep a box for donations

If you could use some general decluttering, then keep a box for donations. If you receive something, donate some of your old stuff!

Recycle the tree

Composting trees is environmentally friendly, creates great compost for gardeners and doesn’t take up space in landfill.

Store gifts for next year

If you got a gift that you plan on re-gifting next year, create a box for these.

Double check the tree

Make sure you got all of the ornaments off of your tree, it’s easy to miss some. Roll your tree around on your lawn to make sure you them all!

Check for stains

Check your house for stains, the longer the stains sit, the harder they are to remove. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and effort addressing those stains now. 

Clean out the fridge

Clean out expired foods and things you know you don’t use.
